MDOT unveils Wiscasset bypass plans

The Maine Department of Transportation this week released five options for a bypass that would divert traffic around Wiscasset's congested village district, the Portland Press Herald reported. Each route would require displacing businesses and residences by eminent domain.

The bypass is expected to ease traffic jams during July and August that can extend for more than four miles in both directions along Route One.

The Federal Highway Administration is expected to pay for most of the construction, which could cost up to $79 million and might not begin for at least another decade, considering the lengthy design and permitting process and the limited availability of funds, the paper reported. The study also offers a no-build alternative to a bypass, which would cost just over $1 million for modest traffic improvements to roads and intersections.
