ME could join health care reform lawsuit

Maine may join in a pending lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the federal health care reform law passed earlier this year.

Governor-elect Paul LePage told MaineToday Media he planned to meet with Maine's new Attorney General William Schneider to discuss joining the lawsuit filed in federal court in Florida. Twenty states so far have joined the suit, which aims to repeal the provision in the Affordable Care Act that requires individuals to buy health insurance. Schneider also told MaineToday the law violates the Constitution by fining people if they do not buy insurance. The provision goes into effect in 2014.

Outgoing Attorney General Janet Mills told the media company that if Maine joins in the lawsuit, the state's legal fees, which would be footed by the taxpayers, could be as much as $400,000.
