Patients authorized by other states to obtain and use medical marijuana can now do so more easily in Maine, under a bill signed into law by Gov. Janet Mills on June 6.
Patients from other states need only their medical marijuana permit and a photo identification to continue their treatment when visiting Maine under the amended provisions of LD 538, "An Act To Ensure Access to Medical Cannabis for Visiting Qualifying Patients."
The law repeals a previous requirement that visiting patients obtain a signed form in advance from the caregiver or dispensary providing their medical marijuana, a process that bill sponsor Rep. Lydia Blume, D-York, called “time-consuming and cumbersome.”
Under the new regulation, it’s illegal for visiting patients to obtain more 2.5 ounces of medical marijuana or to cultivate or transfer it.
Because the Legislature passed the bill as an emergency measure, the law took effect immediately.
“With cannabis legal in Maine for qualified patients and adults over 21, it’s high time the state started to collect revenue and benefit from taxed, regulated sales,” said Paul T. McCarrier, president of Legalize Maine and operator of 1 Mill, a registered caregiver storefront in Belfast.
