Memorial Bridge funding in jeopardy

Efforts to cut the federal budget could spell the end of a $20 million federal appropriation to help replace the aging Memorial Bridge between Portsmouth, N.H., and Kittery.

Lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives, including New Hampshire's Frank Guinta and Charlie Bass, voted over the weekend in favor of eliminating several economic recovery grants, including the one for the bridge, The Associated Press reported. Both Guinta and Bass said they are working to find other funding for the bridge project, while members of the congressional delegations from Maine and others from New Hampshire are urging the U.S. Department of Transportation to set aside the money to help pay for the bridge. In October, the U.S. DOT approved New Hampshire's application for $20 million in funds to replace the aging bridge.

Work on the $90 million project is currently set to begin in the summer of 2012.
