Mercy Health System of Maine will eliminate 75 positions as part of its plan to reorganize in light of the economic downturn and a decline in patients.
The cuts amount to about 2% of Mercy's 1,657 employees, according to the Portland Press Herald. Mercy eliminated 58 positions in March and half of those workers took new jobs in other areas of the company. Some of the newly laid off employees may fill new positions and those who are not placed will receive severance packages and outplacement assistance, company officials told the newspaper.
Eileen Skinner, president and CEO of Mercy, issued a written statement saying the job cuts and reorganization are linked to Mercy's goal to move toward more technologically advanced systems, modern facilities and coordinated care.
Mercy also plans to add about 40 positions over the next six to eight months in its primary care and specialty care centers, which continue to expand. A new primary and express care center opened recently in Gorham and another is scheduled to open early next year in the Yarmouth-Cumberland area, the paper reported.
