Mercy Hospital contractor facing lawsuit
The parent organization of Portland's Mercy Hospital has tapped Chicago-based Accretive Health to provide management support services at the hospital. The company, however, is being sued by the Minnesota Attorney General's Office for allegations that the company posted debt collectors in hospital emergency rooms and patients' bedsides.
Pennsylvania-based Catholic Health East told the Portland Press Herald that Accretive will help its members, including Mercy, better manage its revenue cycles and improve its financial stability. Susan Rouillard, Mercy's chief development and communications officer, said the hospital is just learning of the allegations by the Minnesota AG's office, but that it and Catholic Health East did perform due diligence and are satisfied with its decision to partner with the company.The partnership should not impact any jobs in Portland.
Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson sued Accretive Health in January, alleging the company violated U.S. and state patient-privacy and debt collection laws. The suit claims Accretive employees pressured families to pay for services before they were rendered, insinuating that they wouldn't receive care without up-front payment.
