Metro areas see GDP gains

This item was corrected to reflect the dollar amounts are billions, not millions.

All three of Maine's major metropolitan areas showed increases in their contributions to the state's gross domestic product in 2010, with Portland besting the national average.

In 2010, the country's GDP rebounded by 2.5% compared with 2009's drop of -2.5%, according to statistics released today by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. The manufacture of durable goods led the resurgence, followed by an uptick in wholesale and retail trade and financial services, according to the BEA release. Construction was the biggest industry sector that posted a continued decline.

In Maine, the Portland-South Portland-Biddeford metropolitan area showed the greatest GDP gain, increasing from $25.0 billion in 2009 to $25.9 billion in 2010. Lewiston-Auburn followed, with an increase from $3.7 billion to $3.8 billion, and Bangor saw an increase from $5.4 billion to $5.5 billion. The increases, adjusted for inflation, were 2.7%, 1.9% and 0.7%, respectively.
