Mid Coast Hospital opens diabetes center

Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick has opened a new center to help diabetics manage their care.

The Mid Coast Center for Diabetes & Endrocrinology, located at the hospital’s campus east of Cook’s Corner, is part of the hospital’s 10-year plan, “2020 Vision,” which emphasizes preventive health care as a way of improving the health of people with chronic medical conditions, including both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

According to The Forecaster, the new center will be open to any adult diabetic with a referral from a primary-care physician or hospital staff. Patients referred to the center will receive help ranging from insulin pump training to meal planning. Initially it will only offer outpatient care, but will take referrals from the hospital’s inpatient programs.

Steve Trockman, Mid Coast’s director of community relations, told The Forecaster one of the aims of the new center is to prevent unnecessary diabetes-related hospitalizations, which account for almost $7 million of annual health care expenses in Maine.
