Horch Roofing, a contractor based in the midcoast town of Warren, said Tuesday that it’s expanding its trade scholarship program to two $1,000 prizes this year.
The program was launched in 2018 to support Maine students pursuing a skilled-trades career.
Last year’s prize went to Bradley Nystrom, who is studying precision machining technology at Central Maine Community College in Auburn. He’s on track to graduate this May.
He has also toured area machine shops that need help and is not worried heading into the workforce this summer, according to Horch Roofing.
This year, the company will offer two $1,000 scholarships rather than one.
“We believe it is important to encourage young men and women to study and size opportunities for great careers within the trades,” said Peter Horch, the company’s owner and president, in a news release, noting that thousands of trade jobs go unfilled because of a shortage of skilled laborers.
“This scholarship,” he added, “will help two individuals find competence, satisfaction, enjoying and a successful career in the trades, ideally at Horch Roofing. We are looking for candidates with a proven passion for the trades and enthusiasm to pursue a career in skilled work.”
Scholarship applications must be submitted online by May 1.
