A Hallowell broadband provider has said it will offer internet service in Millinocket.
Outer Reach Broadband said its reach will be 1,800 homes in the Penobscot County town.
"Joining the Millinocket community is a huge thrill for us," said Tom Kirby, president of Outer Reach Broadband. "It's a truly special town that will benefit from accessible high-speed internet subscriptions in exciting new ways. Our home-grown approach to connecting communities was made for Maine towns just like Millinocket, so we're really looking forward to these new opportunities."
Millinocket has a population of 4,269, according to the 2021 U.S. Census.
High-speed internet is considered a crucial part of economic development, and Millinocket currently has a range of service providers offering 5G internet, satellite service, fixed wireless, DSL, cable and fiber.
Outer Reach plans to offer fixed wireless access technology from Tarana, a broadband solution provider. Monthly internet packages start at $45.
For the project, Outer Reach implemented Tarana's Gigabit 1 (G1) wireless broadband to cover six square miles. Planning and development for the project kicked off in December 2021 and was completed in June.
"We are delighted to help Outer Reach close the digital divide in small-town Maine,” said Basil Alwan, CEO of Tarana Wireless Inc., which is based in Milpitas, Calif. The company has invested more than $400 million in technology.
Outer Reach Broadband, which is based in Hallowell, was founded in 2020.
