Two Maine residents have been named finalists for the top job at Maine Maritime Academy.
After considering more than 50 applicants, the academy's nine-member presidential search committee has whittled its choices down to William Brennan and Jeffrey Monroe. One of these two men will replace Leonard Tyler, who resigned as president of MMA in mid-February after 15 years in the position.
Brennan, who began his career as a merchant marine, is a former commissioner of the Maine Department of Marine Resources and a former administrator of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. He has also held various other government and educational positions, including as the Sawyer Professor of Ocean Studies at MMA.
Monroe, a 1976 graduate of MMA, is a transportation consultant and currently vice president of Transportation Services North America at the MacDonnell Group in Halifax, N.S. He is also former director of the Department of Ports and Transportation for the city of Portland. Prior to his work in Portland, Monroe held various other positions, including deputy port director at the Massachusetts Port Authority and director of the Center for Maritime Training at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
Both candidates will be invited to the school to visit with various constituent groups. The school's Board of Trustees expects to name their presidential appointee later this year.
As a Trustee Emeritus at MMA, serving of search committees at Husson University & Unity College, and with my father being a member of the first class at MMA; we should all be very pleased to have two finalists so well qualified to lead MMA.
The Search Committee deserves credit for doing their job skillfully and timely.
Here's wishing the Wisdom of Solomon to the Search Committee Members in making a final selection.
