Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor will lay off nearly 50 full-time and part-time employees, including 23 nurses.
Jill McDonald, a hospital spokeswoman, told the Bangor Daily News the workers were notified Wednesday and most layoffs are taking effect March 19. The reductions are driven by a combination of the economic downturn, changes in public and private insurance reimbursements and improvements in outpatient care, she told the newspaper.
The Bangor Daily News also reported the layoffs followed the medical center's decision in January to offer early retirement to a number of employees as part of an effort to reduce the total work force there by 100 positions. McDonald says about 300 senior staff, many approaching retirement age, were offered incentives to accept early retirement benefits. She says about 50 employees accepted the offer.
EMMC employs about 3,700 workers in its inpatient and outpatient service areas, including about 1,000 nurses. EMMC made the decision to eliminate 100 jobs because of a recent $4.6 million reduction in revenues from Maine's Medicare program, MaineCare. In September, the hospital cut 15 positions.
