MaineToday Media, the company that owns the Portland Press Herald and several other newspapers, will cut more jobs in the next 30 days.
MaineToday CEO Richard Connor told Maine Public Broadcasting Network Tuesday the job cuts are needed to strengthen a company he says was on the verge of bankruptcy when MaineToday Media bought it last year from the Seattle Times. The number of layoffs in this round will depend on how many choose to accept buyouts that the company will offer. He added the decision about how many jobs will be eliminated will be made by March 8. "While we have seen substantial progress in straightening out business problems we've had, and, quite frankly, showing some growth, we still need this business to be of an appropriate size relative to the market that it serves and the amount of business we have," Connor told MPBN.
Connor said the company will be left with about 400 employees at the Portland Press Herald, the Maine Sunday Telegram, the Kennebec Journal in Augusta and the Morning Sentinel in Waterville, as well as the website, MaineToday.com. The company last June announced that top executives and 22 non-union employees would lose their jobs once the acquisition was complete.
