Morning Dew Farm turns to crowdfunding in hopes of 68-acre purchase

Brendan McQuillen and Brady Hatch, the husband-and-wife owners of the Newcastle-based Morning Dew Farm, have launched a crowdfunding campaign with hopes of purchasing an expansive plot of land in Damariscotta that was once slated to be a Walmart.

The Lincoln County News spoke to the owners of the MOFGA-certified organic farm, who launched the Indiegogo campaign in hopes of raising $32,000 of the needed $106,000 asking price for the 68-acre property on Route 1 in the town, to find out what made them decide to launch the Indiegogo campaign.

“We do truly feel connected to the Damariscotta community,” McQuillen told the paper. “We both worked at the [Damariscotta] River Grill when we moved here and got to know the people. Now we’re working with the businesses here, and we want to be around and be a part of the development of this community over the next 10, 15, 20 years.”

McQuillen and Hatch have been farming on leased land for the past 12 years. On their Indiegogo campaign site, the couple says that they want to continue to live and participate in the Midcoast Maine community where they have roots — their daughter currently attends the same preschool that Hatch went to and all of the food grown on the farm is eaten within 30 miles of the farm and sold directly to area stores, restaurants, farmers market customers and through Morning Dew Farm’s CSA program.
