MPBN hires new president

Broadcast news veteran Mark Vogelzang has been named the new president and CEO of the Maine Public Broadcasting Network.

Vogelzang, 56, comes to Maine from Buffalo, where he served as station manager at NPR member station WBFO-FM, according to a press release from the MPBN Board of Trustees. He also spent 16 years as president of Vermont Public Radio, leaving in 2009, where he helped the organization complete a $10 million endowment campaign and create two regional networks. He was elected to NPR's Board of Directors for seven years and served as the interim executive director of the NPR Foundation in 2009. Vogelzang starts his new job in January, taking over for Jim Dowe, who last spring announced his plans to retire at the end of this year.

In October, MPBN tapped former Maine Community Foundation president and CEO Henry "Hank" Schmelzer to chair its board of directors.
