After failing to receive marketing money from the newly passed $5.8 billion state budget, backers of Brunswick Naval Air Station's redevelopment intend to launch their own capital campaign.
Steve Levesque, director of the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority, told the Times Record that the authority intends to tap area institutions, companies and individuals to raise $100,000 to market the base's reuse. The authority received $14,500 from Gov. John Baldacci's contingency fund last June to market the base, but none of the $200,000 specifically requested for that purpose was approved in the new budget passed by lawmakers this week. Other money -- a $247,000 Community Development Block Grant and a $40,000 technology grant were approved -- and the governor is backing a $10 million bond request, a portion of which is earmarked for infrastructure conversion at the base, according to the paper.
The marketing money would be used to attend trade shows and pursue potential tenants for the 3,200-acre base, which closes in 2011.
