MTI gives young clusters a boost

Maine's nascent food, aerospace and ocean energy clusters received a boost this month from Maine Technology Institute's Cluster Initiative grants.

The Manufacturers Association of Maine will receive a $499,695 grant from MTI and external matching funds totaling $621,665 to create a Maine Aerospace Alliance in the association. The grant money will be used to secure contracts with prime contractors and manufacturers in aerospace technology and help Maine businesses obtain aerospace certification and training, according to a press release from MTI.

The Maine Grocers Association and the Maine Manufacturing Extension Partnership received an award of $458,922 from MTI to create the Maine Food Producers Alliance to improve marketing, network development and Internet sales of Maine foods. And the Environmental and Energy Technology Council, or E2Tech, received a $50,000 cluster initiative grant which, along with $58,000 in matching funds, will be used to pursue a new ocean energy cluster.
