The sign on top of the Maine Bank & Trust Co. office building downtown says it all. The former Maine Bank & Trust officially adopted its parent company's name, People's United Bank, earlier this month.
Brent Di Giorgio, director of external communications at the People's United Bank's corporate office in Bridgeport, Conn., says the bank renamed all 13 former Maine Bank & Trust branches, 12 former Merrill Merchants Banks and six former Ocean Banks in the state as well as other banks it owns in Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and New York on July 19. Di Giorgio added the renaming process will increase People's United Bank's brand recognition across New England.
Maine Bank & Trust has been owned by People's United Bank since 2008 and the name change, which included a new sign atop 467 Congress St., did not affect any services provided to the Portland branch's customers. "The only real change is a sign above the door," Di Giorgio says.
