Narrow gauge railroad sees visitor uptick
The Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Co. and Museum in Portland has a 30% increase in attendance for the 2012 season. Officials credited the increase to recent efforts to improve the experience for visitors, including new exhibits and events.
Executive Director Allison Tevsh Zittel said the museum added new exhibits and events, including a weekly story time, and diesel and steam guest engineer programs. "We have focused the past year to improve both the museum and educational outcomes for visitors," said Zittel in a press release.
Founded in 1992, the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad is a nonprofit educational organization with 100+ volunteers, who lay and maintain the track, operate trains and assist in the museum. The organization's mission is to preserve historic equipment and educate visitors about Maine's 2-foot gauge railways, which were an important part of the economic development of the interior of Maine from 1870s–1940s. The railroad annually draws thousands of tourists and area residents.
It operates train trips starting at 58 Fore St. several times a day, every day from May through October.
