Natural gas service coming to midcoast
The state has signed an agreement with a Scarborough-based energy company to extend natural gas service to the state prison in Warren, as long as it also extends the line to Rockland. Self-Gen and Rockland officials in December first unveiled plans to extend a natural gas line from central Maine to the midcoast region.
The agreement is still being negotiated, but should be finalized in the next few weeks, according to the Bangor Daily News. Initially, Self-Gen would truck the natural gas to the prison until the $150 million pipeline extension from Windsor is built. The pipeline would enable private businesses to connect to the service as well. In December, the company said it plans to build what it calls tri-generation plants at major facilities that would use natural gas for heating and cooling as well as electricity generation, capturing high-temperature exhaust gases to create steam or hot water. One plant will be built at the prison, while others could be built near potential large customers like Dragon Cement or Pen Bay Medical Center. The Maine Bureau of General Services issued a request for proposals in January for natural gas services for state facilities in the midcoast region.
Self-Gen has tapped Cianbro Corp. of Pittsfield to build the line and any tri-generation plants that may materialize. There was no word on when the pipeline extension would be completed.
