Navy promises $100M to Kittery shipyard

Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery is slated to receive $100 million for upgrades from the U.S. Navy, members of Maine's and New Hampshire's congressional delegations said yesterday.

The money from the Sustainment, Restoration and Modernization budget in fiscal year 2012 would fund facility upgrades and modernization, including building renovations, energy conservation and consolidation of the yard's workshops, according to a press release from U.S. Sen. Susan Collins' office. A recent report from the Government Accountability Office pegged the backlog of needed facility improvements at the shipyard at $513 million. In January, the Navy announced $16 million for construction and modernization at the shipyard's dry dock No. 1.

Congress must still authorize and appropriate these funds, according to the release.
