A combination sauna-and-fitness studio is set to open next month in the Restore Hyper Wellness building in South Portland.

Hotworx South Portland, on Gorham Road, will be the first Maine location of a Louisiana-based chain with over 500 locations nationwide. It's known for an unusual workout experience that incorporates an infrared sauna environment.

The company has come together with Restore Hyper Wellness, which opened its first Maine location in April. Restore offers treatments that include cryotherapy, IV drip therapy, infrared sauna and compression therapy.

“The space was a blank slate for us,” said Katrina Forrest, co-owner of Hotworx. “Restore Hyper Wellness' owners bought the building a few years ago and completely revamped it into three separate units. We are currently in construction at the end unit. Restore is looking to expand in 2024 into the middle with a salt cave as another wellness option.”

The two businesses are trying to create a single site that provides a holistic approach to health and fitness.

“There is no formal collaboration with Restore,” said Forrest. They brought us into the space because they wanted to create a wellness destination for the greater Portland community. We are two separate businesses that are like-minded.”

Unlike most fitness centers, Hotwork utilizes dry heat, so that members experience an "anabolic effect" that speeds up metabolism. It also takes less time to warm up before beginning resistance training in a heated studio, according to the website.

Infrared energy activates the regenerative processes in the body and can help to accelerate workout recovery, the company says.

The studio has 10 infrared saunas offering 30-minute and 15-minute workouts. The training portion involves isometrics, yoga and pilates, along with high-intensity interval training, such as a short routine of rowing or cycling.

The studio also has a functional exercise zone where bands, weights, ropes and other equipment are available for any combination of functional training exercises and routines.

A virtual instructor leads all Hotwork workouts, allowing members to book workouts 24/7. The founding membership fee is $39 a month.
