New CEO at Blethen newspapers

Blethen Maine Newspapers, the state's largest media company, is getting a new chief executive amid efforts to sell the troubled company.

Robert P. Bickler, who for five years has served as president and general manager of the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram, will on Thursday become Blethen Maine Newspapers' new president and CEO, the Portland Press Herald reported. Bickler succeeds Charles C. Cochrane, who steps down today after a 39-year career in newspapers, including 33 years with Blethen Maine's parent company, The Seattle Times Co.

The change in leadership comes as an investment group plans to purchase Blethen. Maine Media Investment plans to line up financing and close the deal early next year. Blethen also publishes the Kennebec Journal in Augusta, the Morning Sentinel in Waterville, The Coastal Journal weekly in Bath and MaineToday.com.
