Gerald Hayman Jr., the longtime chair of Maine’s sixth-largest credit union, University Credit Union, has retired and been succeeded by board member Peter Reid.
Reid, an assistant dean at the University of Maine, took on the volunteer position Feb. 24, according to a news release Monday.
A member of the University Credit Union board since 2016, he serves in the university’s College of Natural Sciences, Forestry and Agriculture, and previously worked for the University of Maine System. He also held UMaine positions in athletics, admissions and student records for 18 years.
Reid earned an MBA from UMaine in 1989 and a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the university in 1985.
Hayman, director of business services for the Bangor School Department, joined the board in 1992 and had served as chair since 2011.
“It has been an honor to help University Credit Union grow from its campus roots into the modern, statewide cooperative institution it is today,” he said in the release. “Our members will continue to be in the very best hands with my colleagues on the board and our president and CEO, Renee Ouellette.”
Reid said, “On behalf of our members and my fellow board directors, I want to thank Jerry for his years of leadership and contributions to the credit union and wish him well. Over the past year, with Renee Ouellette taking over as president and CEO, we have opened an exciting new chapter of UCU’s history, and I look forward to building on the services and experience that UCU has been providing to its members for more than 50 years.”
Established on the UMaine campus in 1967, University Credit Union is a full-service financial institution with its headquarters and two retail locations in Orono, as well as branches in Bangor, Farmington, Gorham, Portland and Presque Isle.
University Credit Union reported assets of $385 million at the end of 2020, and ranked No. 6 among the state's largest credit unions in the 2021 Mainebiz Book of Lists.
