New data: Maine Airbnb hosts earn $26 million in 2016

Airbnb

Airbnb announced today that Maine’s 3,700 active hosts earned more than $26 million in supplemental income in 2016 by hosting approximately 174,000 visitors to the state.

The 2016 total doubled the number of inbound guest arrivals from the previous year.

The typical host in Maine earned $5,900 last year, often using the additional funds to make rent or mortgage payments, save for retirement or repay student loans, Airbnb stated in its release. The typical listing is occupied 30 nights per year and the average length of stay is 2.7 nights.

“We are proud to see that more and more Mainers have discovered home sharing as an opportunity to share their community with visitors from around the world, and earn a little bit of extra money along the way, said Andrew L. Kalloch, Northeast public policy director for Airbnb. “From Portland to Presque Isle, Airbnb hosts are ambassadors to the Pine Tree State and we are grateful they have embraced home sharing as a way to welcome thousands of visitors.”

Portland was the top-ranked Maine city for Airbnb guest arrivals, followed by Bar Harbor, South Portland, Ellsworth and Old Orchard Beach.

Founded in August 2008 and based in San Francisco, Airbnb now serves 34,000 cities and 192 countries.
