WATERVILLE — New Dimensions Federal Credit Union, along with Bowman Constructors, broke ground at the site of its new main office at 94 Silver St.

Construction of the 12,000-square-foot building is expected to be completed next May. It will allow for a larger lobby and modern amenities, but with a traditional feel, the credit union said. The larger lobby will allow for more member service representatives available to assist members’ immediate needs, such as account information, home banking assistance, share draft account opening, and other account services, the release said.

Once the new credit union building opens for business, the current location at 61 Grove St. will be used for back-office operations, the release said. The credit union bought the 1.3-acre lot in early 2018. It had previously had a building with a doctor's office, which was torn down before the sale.

The site on Silver Street will be more accessible to members from around the region, officials said when the new site was first announced. Silver Street, which is directly off Kennedy Memorial Drive, which leads to Interstate 95 Exit 127, is one of the gateway streets into Waterville.

Credit union officials have said that the financial institution's growth over the past five years made the move necessary, but it also wanted to keep the Grove Street property, which is near where the credit union was first chartered in the 1950s. The credit union has been at 61 Grove St. since 1987.

The contractor, Bowman Constructors, of Newport, is a family-owned general contracting firm offering construction management, pre-engineered buildings and design and build services.

The credit union plans to post updates on the building's progress on its Facebook page.

New Dimensions merged with Taconnet FCU, of Skowhegan, in April 2018. It has more than $160 million dollars in assets. Along with Waterville, it has branches in Augusta, Winslow, and Skowhegan. The credit union has 16,000 members and 60 employees.
