New farm-to-table eatery planned for Damariscotta

Plans are in the works to open a farm-to-table restaurant in downtown Damariscotta.

The Lincoln County News reported the Damariscotta Planning Board approved Eleanor Kinney’s application to open the River House at 27 Main St.

Kinney owns an organic farm called Heart Farm.

According to Maine magazine, Kinney serves on the steering committee of Slow Money Maine and is co-founder of No Small Potatoes, an investment club that provides micro-loans to Maine farmers and the food businesses that source from them.

Her plans are part of the vertically integrated farm-to-table movement. St. Joseph's College's historic Stone Barn, for example, has a summer-long series of farm-to-table dinners, which feature Maine-made farm produce and meats as well as wines and beers. Agritourism offerings include the farm-to-table dinners, tours of local farms, field trips for local public schools and farm volunteering.

Last August, Mark Green, a professor of natural science at St. Joseph's, told Mainebiz that Maine is well positioned to be at the forefront of the local food movement, because of both traditional agriculture and the new developments in aquaculture and hydroponics.

Similarly, a nanobrewery, Pour Farm Brewery, which opened last February in Union, was also modeled after the farm-to-table movement, with plans to grow hops and botanicals for use in its brews.
