New firm replaces Oxford in BNAS talks

Oxford Aviation is stepping back from plans to open a facility at the Brunswick Naval Air Station, but may be a "strategic partner" in a new corporation expected to locate there, according to redevelopment director Steve Levesque.

The Oxford-based aviation firm has long been in talks to lease a portion of the base's airport facilities, but a new corporation led by defense attorney F. Lee Bailey will instead take over negotiations, Levesque, executive director of the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority, told The Times Record. Bailey, a high-profile attorney who represented O.J. Simpson, has been acting as a spokesman for Oxford Aviation and its efforts to open an aircraft refurbishing facility at the base. MRRA officials said Thursday that Bailey will present a new application and business plan to the redevelopment authority, and that Oxford Aviation President Jim Horowitz will "not be the primary player in the new application," according to Chairman Art Mayo.

The base's airport ceased military operation on Friday, and MRRA officials are working to put it under civilian control for redevelopment later this year.
