New fund seeks to preserve farmland

A network of donors is committing $1 million to support local agriculture and preserve working farms in Maine.

The Maine Community Foundation in Ellsworth plans to allocate the funds to the Maine Farmland Trust of Belfast to purchase and preserve farms that will be resold to farmers who plan to work the land, The Times Record reported. The foundation, which pools donations for grants and scholarships, seeks to prevent the conversion of the state's farmland to residential and commercial use.

According to their website, Maine has about 1.3 million acres of farmland, and agriculture contributes $1.2 billion to the state's economy, the paper reported.
