New manufacturer to take over Sanford plant

A new company is planning to take over the Whatman plant in Sanford and retain 65 of its 225 workers.

Maine Manufacturing LLC is in negotiations with GE Healthcare Life Sciences, Whatman's parent company, to lease the 90,000-square-foot plant when it closes at the end of this year, according to the Journal Tribune. Maine Manufacturing, which makes diagnostic and laboratory supplies for the medical industry, plans to keep 65 workers, and expects to add up to 40 jobs by the end of May, company President Bill Emhiser told the paper. The company will subcontract work from GE Healthcare Life Sciences, and has received a $100,000 Community Development Block Grant for working capital.

Spurred by the announcement in 2008 that GE Healthcare would close the Sanford plant and lay off its 225 workers. Whatman's chief engineer Craig Cunningham launched Maine Manufacturing, and enlisted Emhiser, former CEO for Britain-based Whatman, to become president of the new company, the Journal Tribune reported.
