The Portland Planning Board recently approved a 42,000-square-foot medical center for Martin's Point Health Care, according to a press release from the health care organization. The building would be located on a 12-acre piece of land at the company's main campus at 331 Veranda St., near the former Marine hospital building built in the 1850s.
The first two floors of the LEED-certified building would be used for parking and the third floor for medical services. Since the location has historic significance, the plans have undergone a long review process from the city and other organizations, including the Historic Preservation Board of Portland and the Maine Historic Preservation Commission. Both groups have approved the building, which has been scaled down from 56,000 square feet as originally proposed.
If the building permit is approved, site work is expected to begin in May, with construction later this year, according to the release. The medical center is expected to be open in December 2010. Martin's Point is a nonprofit health care organization that serves Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York.
