A new podcast features prominent developers and real estate investors who do business in Maine and in Portland in particular.
Boulos Co. senior partner Gregory Boulos recently started "The Boulos Beat," which explores the Maine commercial real estate world through in-depth interviews with its movers and shakers. The series is hosted by Boulos and guest hosts.
One interview is with Fred Forsley, founder of Shipyard Brewing Co. “What most people don’t realize is he has built up a tremendous amount of real estate over the years, including his location on Newbury Street," Boulos told Mainebiz. "We discuss how he got his start in the business and how a largely vacant retail center he owned in Kennebunk gave birth to Shipyard beer.”
In addition to Forsley, Boulos has interviewed developers David Bateman, whose experience goes back four decades; Jim Brady, developer of the Press Hotel; and Joe Soley, a longtime Portland developer and landlord.
Upcoming broadcasts include realtor and developer Joseph Boulos, who is Gregory Boulos’ brother, hotel developer Peter Anastos and Cumberland developer Ford Reiche.
“I thought it would be interesting to talk with some of these people, to see how they got into the business, what motivates them,” said Boulos. “One thing that was interesting, in talking with these folks, is that virtually all of them started from scratch.”
Boulos started recording the interviews about a month ago, on a schedule of every two weeks or so. Production takes place at the Portland Pod, owned by Tanner Campbell and located at SoPoCo.Works on Broadway in South Portland, in conjunction with Collin Henderson of Trail Marker Productions.
The videos include footage of the interviews interspersed with stills that illustrate the interview subject’s background, Boulos explained.
Boulos includes some standard questions in his interviews.
“One is, ‘Where do you see Portland 10 years from now?’” he said. “Everybody is very positive on Portland. Even if there’s a recession coming, everyone says Portland is on the map and has some legs on under it. It’s interesting to hear how people view Portland, what they think the strengths of the city are and where they think it’s headed. These guys are in the trenches every day.”
How did he get the idea for the podcast?
“I was just driving around one day,” he said. “I had been listening to some podcasts, and I thought, We could do that locally. I thought it would be a good way to document what is going on currently, for future generations. And it’s a good tool for younger brokers and developers to get some perspective on what’s going on and what it takes to be successful.
"Something I noticed is that people who have been in the business for a while have all been through major corrections to the market. They talk about how it’s not all fun and games and what they did to survive. Ultimately, they got through the down times and they thrived.”
