The new Pine Tree Recovery Center, at 17 Bishop St. in Portland, is scheduled to open Aug. 8.

The Forecaster reported there are are four single-bed rooms; some rooms have surveillance to monitor high-risk patients. Staff includes on-duty counselors, health technicians, nurses and health-care providers, program director John Buro said. The center also has a kitchen and staff to prepare three meals daily.

The facility is in a building that formerly housed Spurwink Services Inc., provider of behavioral health and education services for children, adults and families. Spurwink’s headquarters remains in Portland and it has numerous sites around the state.

Last November, Buro told Mainebiz he got into the field as a result of his own experience with substance use disorder. After his own recovery, he studied behavioral health and addiction psychology, obtaining licensure as an alcohol and drug counselor, then worked at several treatment centers in Portland and elsewhere in New England.

He was also involved in helping to establish new recovery programs, including an extended care and sober living facility in Portland, and a detox and residential facility in Florida. All together, he's been involved in helping to set up about a half dozen facilities in New England and two in Florida. The partnership for Pine Tree came about with long-time colleagues and friends, Buro said.

According to the Pine Tree Recovery Center website, the facility serves as an entry point of care to stabilize clients through appropriate medication and clinical oversight. It provides luxury accommodations and resort-like amenities.
