New unemployment claims are down in Maine, but still soaring above historic levels

The number of Mainers applying for unemployment benefits last week was down from previous weeks, but still far more than in recent history, according to data released Thursday by the state Department of Labor.

As the state continues to reel economically from the global pandemic, the Labor Department received over 7,400 applications for the week ending April 25. That number was down from 11,600 during the previous seven-day period, but still an increase of 6,700 over the same week in 2019.

A total of 30,889 people in Maine applied for unemployment compensation from March 29 to April 4, 2020, the most ever in a week.

More than 108,000 Mainers have filed for unemployment in the past six weeks, and nationwide, 30 million people have applied for benefits since the COVID-19 crisis began affecting the U.S.
