A new Wal-Mart store could be coming to Thomaston as early as next year.
The Arkansas-based retailer has filed a pre-application request and site plan draft with the state for a retail complex on Route 1, according to the Herald Gazette. The plan includes building a 150,000-square-foot retail building, a 5,600-square-foot restaurant and space for other retail stores totaling 62,400 square feet. Developer Scott Shapiro and his engineer, Alton Palmer, recently met with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and other officials to discuss the proposal. The pair first pitched the idea to the Thomaston Planning Board last September and tentatively identified one of the other retail stores as a Tractor Supply Co. location. Any building likely wouldn't begin until 2011, they told the planning board last year.
The project would require widening part of Route 1 to add a turning lane and a traffic light. Since the project involves a retail store larger than 75,000 square feet, the developers must also provide the Maine State Planning Office with $40,000 for an impact study of the project per the state's Informed Growth Act, according to the paper.
