New York-based Patriot Energy Services LLC has signed a contract to purchase the Greenville Steam Co. biomass plant in Greenville, with plans to recall more than 22 employees. The sale price was not disclosed, but according to Patriot Energy, the cost to build the facility new would exceed $57 million.
The 19-megawatt plant underwent a $7 million retrofit in 2006, but was shuttered last year for unknown reasons, according to a press release. Patriot Energy CEO Steven Johnson said in the release that the company might make improvements to the facility, including developing an attached 99 acres into a greenhouse for commercial growers. Extra steam generated from the facility would heat the greenhouse. He said the company also hopes to launch a training school for ecology students to learn about the renewable energy business.
The company will use its own financial resources to restart the operation and won't seek outside investment, according to the release. It hopes to reopen the plant in mid-August.
In January 2010, Dallas-based Tang Energy bought the plant from NextEra Energy, which closed it in 2009. Through a subsidiary, Gallop Power Greenville, Tang Energy restarted the plant and rehired 22 employees before eventually shuttering it again.
According to its website, Patriot Energy Services is a renewable energy and waste management company that supplies wood waste to biomass power plants.
This would be great if it reopens and they upgrade the power electric station and add a solar power panel farm on the 99 acre instead of the greenhouse or maybe a smaller greenhouse and that solar power to go with the wood chip and agriculture bio mass fuel facilities for electric power.
