NewPage cuts production in Rumford

NewPage Corp. has reduced by half the amount of time its No. 15 paper machine runs at its Rumford plant, but the cut hasn't yet resulted in layoffs.

The roughly 20 workers affected by the slowdown are filling in for other employees who are on vacation, the Sun Journal reported. A full shutdown of the mill scheduled for the last two weeks of June appears to have been delayed, and a local union official says operations continue on a minute-to-minute basis.

About 100 workers were permanently laid off in January to reduce costs and production at the mill. Miamisburg, Ohio-based NewPage, which operates seven paper mills, has laid off hundreds of employees companywide in recent months, the paper reported.
