NewPage to idle machine indefinitely

As many as 100 positions at the NewPage mill in Rumford will be temporarily eliminated starting Sept. 18.

The company said last Wednesday that the No. 10 paper machine would be temporarily shut down for two weeks, but Janet Hall, a spokeswoman for the mill, said Friday that the No. 10 paper machine will be idled indefinitely, according to the Sun Journal. Local 900 Union President Matt Bean told the paper 100 positions would be affected by the shutdown, but not necessarily 100 workers. The No. 15 machine, which has been running only five days a week for several weeks, will resume a seven-days-a-week schedule on the 18th.

Bean attributed the temporary shutdown to the struggling coated-paper market. Hall told the Sun Journal the mill is currently in talks with the town of Rumford to explore options to help the paper mill, but would not confirm if those options included tax breaks.
