New hires

Varney Agency in Bangor recently hired Craig Bassingthwaite as a risk control and claims manager in the agency's Scarborough office and Steve Nadeau as accounting manager in its Bangor office. Bassingthwaite has experience as an inside adjuster, field adjuster, large loss adjuster, supervisor, claims manager and vice president of claims. Nadeau previously managed departments in the medical and textile industries.

Bangor Savings Bank recently hired Roxanne Jobe as branch manager of its Bucksport branch. Jobe was most recently involved in small business lending and economic development in Maine.

Portland's Downtown District recently hired Rachel Irwin as events and marketing manager. Previously, Irwin worked for public relations and marketing agencies in Maine and California.

Rinck Advertising, a marketing, advertising and public relations agency in Auburn, recently hired Vicky Ayer as media director and Lia Prysunka as production artist. Ayer was previously a media director for Swardlick Marketing Group in Portland. Prysunka has a background in graphic and production design, website development and branding.

The directors of Macpage LLC, a CPA firm in South Portland, recently hired Maureen Kenney as a consulting manager. Kenney was previously an independent consultant at MJK Consulting Services.

The Frances Perkins Center in Damariscotta announced that its executive director, Laura Fortman, was recently hired as the deputy administrator of the Wage and Hour Division of the Department of Labor in Washington. Fortman was Maine's commissioner of the Department of Labor from 2003 to 2011.

Down East Credit Union in Baileyville recently hired Bill Crawford as business development account executive for the Bangor and Midcoast region. Crawford has more than 22 years of experience in the financial field.

Target Marketing Maine, a direct and digital marketing company in Rockland, recently hired Denis Walsh as sales manager and Chris Stalcup as a sales representative.

CCB Inc., a construction company in Westbrook, recently hired Bradley Marin as project engineer. Marin has experience in commercial construction, including project management/supervision, administration, estimating and structural engineering design.

Cross Insurance, a subsidiary of Cross Financial Corp., recently hired Andre Schehr as commercial accounts executive in the firm's Portland office. Schehr was previously with Willis of Northern New England Inc.

Long Creek Youth Development Center in Westbrook recently hired Jeff Merrill as superintendent. Merrill was previously acting superintendent at the facility.

The Orthopaedic Institute of Central Maine and Central Maine Orthopaedics in Lewiston recently hired Diane Jeselskis as chief customer officer for the Orthopaedic Institute of Central Maine. Jeselskis was previously a clinical coordinator with the company.

Pierce Atwood LLP, a law firm in Portland, recently hired Lee Cullivan as director of IT. Cullivan was previously an IT engineering manager and network manager at Boston Medical Center.

Pika Energy, an energy development and wind turbine manufacturer in Westbrook, recently hired Bill Hetzel as director of operations. Hetzel was previously plant manager at Tom's of Maine.

The board of governors of the Maine State Bar Association recently named Angela Weston as its executive director. Weston previously served as deputy executive director of the association since 2004.

Natalie's at the Camden Harbour Inn in Camden recently hired Jon Gaboric as executive chef. Gaboric, a winner of "Chef Wanted" on The Food Network, was most recently general manager and executive chef at Sobani Restaurant and Wine Bar and a founder and operating partner of Wefuse Eatery in Austin, Texas.

The Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram recently announced four new hires. J. Craig Anderson was hired as a business reporter; Joe Lawlor as health care and social services reporter; Amelia Kunhardt as photo editor; and Susan Axelrod as online content producer.

Promotions

Fluid Imaging Technologies, a laboratory instrumentation manufacturer in Yarmouth, recently promoted Harry Nelson to vice president, aquatic markets. Nelson previously served as director of aquatic sales and marketing.

Machias Savings Bank recently promoted Jason Appleby to branch manager of the bank's Machias branch. Appleby, an assistant vice president, was previously the assistant branch manager there.

TD Bank recently promoted Joanie Monteith to manager of its Kennebunk branch. Monteith was previously assistant manager in York.

Willis of Northern New England Inc., an insurance and reinsurance broker in Lewiston, recently promoted Gloria Gilbert to senior vice president of operations. Gilbert was previously the vice president of operations.

Know Technology, an IT provider in Camden and Portland, recently promoted Peter Koehling to service desk technician II.

Maine Trailer, a parts, service, sales and leasing trailer company in Hampden and Auburn, recently promoted Rod Hathaway to COO. Previously, Hathaway served as vice president of operations.

Appointments

College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor recently announced that Alyne Cistone and Becky Ann and Dylan Baker were elected to its board of trustees. Cistone is the is the executive director of Island Housing Trust in Mount Desert Island while the Bakers, who will serve as parent trustees, are New York City actors.

The Joint Standing Committee on State and Local Government recently voted in favor of Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap's re-appointment of David Cheever to the position of state archivist. Cheever, an Augusta resident, was originally appointed in June 2007.

BerryDunn, a CPA and consulting firm in Portland, recently announced that Barbara McGuan was named to the board of governors for the Maine Society of CPAs, a statewide not-for-profit professional organization representing nearly 1,000 CPAs in business, education, government and public accounting. McGuan, a principal and member of the tax consulting and compliance and not-for-profit groups at the firm, will serve a three-year term.

Pierce Atwood, a law firm in Portland, recently announced that Ralph Lancaster Jr., of counsel at the firm, was named chairman of the board of trustees of the Supreme Court Historical Society. The society, a private nonprofit organization, is dedicated to the collection and preservation of the history of the Supreme Court of the United States.

Eastern Maine Development Corp., in Bangor recently announced the addition of Julie Green and Brian Langley to its board of directors. Langley serves as state senator for Maine's 28th District and Green is the director of public affairs and government relations at Husson University in Bangor.

Gov. Paul LePage recently appointed David Van Slyke to the New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission. Van Slyke, an attorney at Preti Flaherty in Portland, is chair of the firm's environmental practice group and co-chair of the climate strategy group.

Maine Real Estate & Development Association recently elected Jed Harris as board member. Harris operates North Atlantic Properties, a Portland firm that owns and invests in a portfolio of commercial properties.

The Alzheimer's Association, Maine Chapter recently named Kim Block, news anchor at WGME, as its 2013 Maine Alzheimer's Champion. Block was honored for her leadership and dedication to increasing awareness of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias.

Fisher & Phillips LLP, a law firm in Portland, recently announced that four of its attorneys were featured in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business 2013. Jonathan Shapiro, regional managing partner, earned recognition this year in the areas of labor and employment law and benefits and compensation while partners Melinda Caterine and Eric Uhl and of counsel Philip Moss were listed for labor and employment law.

The Maine Real Estate & Development Association recently announced its 2013 award recipients of its annual real estate spring conference. Honorees included: Ocean Properties Ltd., West Street Hotel in Bar Harbor; Avesta Housing, Oak Street Lofts in Portland; Park Street School, Kennebunk and Emery School, Biddeford; The Szanton Co., The Lofts at Bates Mill in Lewiston; and the University of New England, Harold Alfond Forum in Biddeford.

O'Hare Associates, a CPA firm in South Portland, recently announced that Sean O'Hare earned the designation of certified tax resolution specialist.

Five Maine drivers representing FedEx Corp., operating companies placed among the top finishers at the 2013 Maine State Truck Driving Championship held recently in Hermon. Bob Cochran earned his second consecutive state title with a win in the step van class; Lester Lord finished second in the four-axle class; Erik Barden and Alex Hutchinson completed a sweep of the step van class with their second- and third-place finishes, respectively; and Ray Rogers finished third in the twins class.

LEADers Encouraging Aroostook Development and Momentum Aroostook recently presented the 2013 Aroostook Entrepreneur of the Year Award to David Harbison Jr., owner and president of Bison Pumps in Houlton.

Town & Country Federal Credit Union in South Portland was recently honored with two excellence awards from the Credit Union National Association Human Resources/Training and Development Council. The credit union captured an Employee Engagement Award for its employee experience team project and received the Strategic Leadership Award for its recent online banking conversion project.
