New hires

Troubh Heisler LLC, a law firm in Scarborough, hired Daniel Kramer as a general practice attorney focusing on real estate, zoning and land use, estate planning and administration, business entities and general civil litigation.

Verrill, a law firm in Portland, hired Emily Coombs and Nicholas Anania as attorneys. Coombs will rely on her business background to support employers in solving complex workplace issues while Anania will focus his practice on a broad range of transactions and corporate work, including mergers and acquisitions, commercial lending, contracts and general business counseling.

Full Plates Full Potential, a nonprofit in Portland addressing child hunger, hired Justin Strasburger as the organization’s first executive director. Strasburger, who has 15 years of experience as a leader and advocate for access, equity and opportunities, previously led strategic initiatives and national growth strategy at Bottom Line, a college access and completion organization.

Northern Light Health in Brewer hired Caryl Heaton as hospice physician at Northern Light Home Care & Hospice in Ellsworth. Heaton has 30 years of experience in primary care medicine.

Friends of Congress Square Park in Portland hired C.J. Opperthauser as executive director. Opperthauser spent the past six years in Providence, R.I. where he was involved with various organizations in the fields of placemaking, active transportation and land use.

Fontaine Family – the Real Estate Leader in Auburn hired Megan Trundy as an agent in Auburn.

Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford hired brothers Jeffrey and Matthew Bush as orthopedic surgeons. Jeffrey Bush specializes in hip and knee replacement while Matthew Bush specializes in hand and upper extremity.

Bristol Seafood in Portland hired Rick Espindola as vice president of procurement. Espindola was previously managing director of Superior Seafood Solutions.

Promotions

Machias Savings Bank promoted Jennifer Walter to mortgage originator in Bar Harbor. Walter was previously a financial services specialist.

The Finance Authority of Maine promoted Carlos Mello to acting CEO. Mello, previously chief risk officer, is a senior member of the organization’s management team and has been with the agency for eight years.

U.S. Sen. Angus King promoted Morgan Cashwell to legislative director and Sanjay Kane to deputy legislative director in his Washington, D.C., office.

MMG Insurance Co. in Presque Isle promoted Kayla O’Malley Dill to vice president of marketing and business development. Dill was most recently senior territory manager in the state of Maine.

Katahdin Trust in Houlton promoted Patty Hersey to vice president, cash management and business development officer. Hersey, who as been with the bank for 21 years, was previously vice president, business development officer.

Starboard Leadership Consulting in Bangor promoted Mary Budd to president while founder Jeff Wahlstrom was elevated to senior counsel.

Appointments

Murray Plumb & Murray, a law firm in Portland, elected Katherine Krakowka as a director and named Stacey Neumann to the firm’s management committee. Krakowka is an of counsel attorney with a focus on business and corporate law and business reorganization and insolvency while Neumann is a director at the firm and chair of its employment and criminal/white collar defense practice groups.

The board of the Maine Justice Foundation in Hallowell elected Anna Astvatsaturian Turcotte, Timothy Pease and Camrin Rivera as directors. Turcotte is an author, lecturer, business leader and human rights advocate; Pease is vice president for legal and regulatory affairs at Versant Power; and Rivera is a second-year law student at the University of Maine School of Law. In addition, attorney Lowell Brown was elected president. Brown is counsel to the New York firm of Cadwalader, Wickersham and Taft and associate general counsel and chief compliance officer at Sig Sauer.

Achievements

MaineHealth in Portland said that all five of its eligible hospitals received a fall 2020 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade of A, the highest hospital safety grade that Leapfrog offers. Hospitals honored were Franklin Memorial Hospital, Maine Medical Center, Mid Coast Hospital, Pen Bay Medical Center and Southern Maine Health Care.

Central Maine Growth Council in Waterville presented its annual “2020 Developer of the Year” award to Shane Savage, co-owner of Savage’s Drug in Fairfield, Oakland, Winslow and Unity. The council, along with KVConnect, also named Josh Kim its “2020 Emerging Leader of the Year Award” winner. Kim is founder and CEO of the Cubby, an online marketplace exclusively for college students.

Daulton Wickenden, a personal insurance account executive at Allen Insurance and Financial in Camden, graduated from the Safeco Producer Development program.

The University of Maine at Augusta announced that its mental health and human services bachelor’s degree program received national accreditation from the Council for Standards in Human Services Education. The five-year accreditation is the culmination of a three-year process, including a self-study and written report by the faculty of the academic program and a virtual site visit by the council’s site review team.

The Finance Authority of Maine held its annual Showcase Maine event virtually in order to recognize its 2020 successful business and educational partnerships. This year’s award recipients include: “Business at Work for Maine Award,” Origin; “Education at Work for Maine Award,” University of Maine Pulp & Paper Foundation; “Lender at Work for Maine Award (less than $1.5 billion in assets),” Norway Savings Bank; and “Lender at Work for Maine Award (most increased partnership),” Franklin Savings Bank.

Verrill, a law firm in Portland, said it was ranked nationally for its Health Care practice (Tier 2) and in 63 practice areas based on geography by the U.S. News & World Report and Best Lawyers. The firm also announced it was ranked as a “Highly Recommended Firm in Maine,” seven of its Maine-based attorneys were recognized for their litigation skills and Karen Frink Wolf and Martha Gaythwaite were named among the “Top 250 Women in Litigation” in Benchmark Litigation’s 2021 edition. In addition, the firm reported it ranked third in the American Bar Association Health Law Section’s eighth annual “Top 10 Recognition for the Northeast Region,” marking the sixth consecutive year that the firm was recognized on the list.

The city of Augusta announced that it won the 2020 Maine Association of Planners “Planning Award” in recognition of the city’s construction project that converted Water Street to a two-way street and improved Commercial Street in downtown Augusta.

The Portland International Jetport announced that Markus Donahoe, lead airport operations supervisor, earned his Certified Member credential through the American Association of Airport Executives. The credential signifies that Donahoe has a diverse knowledge of the primary functions of how an airport operates.

The First Bancorp, parent company of First National Bank in Damariscotta, was named in the top-20 performance powerhouses from Bank Director, an information resource for director and financial institutions nationwide. The 20 high-performing banks were selected based on total shareholder return generated over a 20-year period, ending June 30, 2020.

The Maine Center for Entrepreneurs, along with its partners the University of Maine, the Lewiston Auburn Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and the Harold Alfond Institute for Business Innovation at Thomas College, announced the 32 businesses selected for the Top Gun 2021 Class. Avesta Housing in Portland named Clark Insurance in Portland as the winner of its “Mike Yandell Award” for extraordinary work in the field of affordable housing.

Legacy Properties Sotheby’s International Realty in Portland said it retained the No. 1 ranking for luxury property sales according to Maine Listings’ statistics. The firm reported that it closed 183 transaction sides over $1 million in 2020, a 54% increase from 2019, and that dollar sales volume also expanded by 95% to $351 million in luxury sales compared to $180 million the previous year.
