No marijuana farmers market for Portland
The Portland City Council has changed its mind on allowing a marijuana farmers market to operate at Deering Oaks park in August over concerns, in part, that marijuana would be available for sale and consumption.
The Portland Press Herald reported that the city council on Monday voted against allowing Belfast-based New World Organics to hold the New England Cannabis Farmers Market. That’s after the city council initially gave the group the green light to move forward.
Councilors voting against the marijuana farmers market said its organizers had made changes to the event after it was initially approved. Those changes include making what was initially proposed as a free event into a paid event and advertising suggesting that marijuana products would be available for on-site sale and consumption.
Justin Olsen, one of the event’s organizers, said the event was meant for networking, adding that plans were dropped for allowing caregivers to provide products to registered medical marijuana patients and that no consumption was allowed.
