Martin Bernstein, CEO of Northern Maine Medical Center in Fort Kent, has abruptly retired, hospital officials said yesterday.
Robin Damboise, director of human resources, did not specify why Bernstein stepped down after leading the hospital for 27 years other than to say his retirement is effective immediately, according to the Bangor Daily News. The hospital's COO, Peter Sirois, has been named interim CEO. In February, the 49-bed hospital cut four administrative positions, reduced administrators' pay by 2% and underwent other restructuring as part of cost-cutting measures.
Bernstein's departure is the latest announcement in a string of hospital leadership changes. Last week, Pen Bay Healthcare President and CEO Roy Hitchings announced he will retire at the end of the year, and Rumford Hospital CEO John Welsh said he will retire July 1. Mid Coast Health Services President and CEO Herbert Paris also said he will retire this summer. In April, Goodall Hospital President and CEO Darlene Stromstad announced she will leave the Sanford facility for a job in Connecticut, and David Proffitt resigned as head of The Acadia Hospital in Bangor.
