Northern utility eyes new transmission

Northern Maine utility Maine Public Service Co. is reviving its plans to connect its transmission network with the rest of the New England grid.

MPS, a subsidiary of Maine & Maritimes Corp., is proposing a 26-mile transmission line from Haynesville to Houlton to connect its network to the rest of Maine and New England's grid, according to a press release. The company submitted an application to ISO-New England, which operates the grid, on Jan. 22 for an electrical study. The 345 kV transmission line would be privately funded, which would prevent the cost of the project from being passed onto northern Maine ratepayers. The transmission line would give northern Maine a better position to access competitive energy resources and increase its market liquidity, as well as allow for more renewable energy development in Aroostook County, according to the release.

Last year, Maine Public Service Co. proposed a 200-mile transmission line from Detroit, Maine, to Limestone to connect to the New England grid, but the project was scrapped due to technical problems and cost.
