The company starting a Portland-to-Nova Scotia ferry service has received federal approval to begin selling tickets, which company officials said would begin at the end of next week.
The Portland Press Herald reported Nova Star Cruises still needs to secure a casualty certificate, proving it has liability coverage, before it can leave a U.S. port with passengers. While the ferry operator secured its “certificate of performance” permit, allowing it to begin selling tickets, the company decided to delay the start of its service by two weeks, from May 1 to May 15.
Company spokesman Dennis Bailey told the newspaper the Nova Star ferry vessel will arrive in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, from Singapore on April 14, traveling to Portland on April 16 for U.S. Coast Guard inspections and installation of 10 table games and 70 slot machines before two May publicity events in Boston and Portsmouth, N.H.
The company also announced Wednesday that it plans to lease space on Merrill’s Wharf in Portland.
