Nova Star Cruises said June ridership increased by 26%, to 8,530 passengers, from the same month last year. If that trend continues, the Portland-Nova Scotia ferry service said, it will exceed 2015 ridership goals.
The Bangor Daily News reported that June’s numbers bring Nova Star to roughly 10% of its total ridership goal for the year, meaning that it will have to attract about 70,000 passengers through July and August to reach expectations.
The newspaper noted that Nova Scotia will continue to subsidize Nova Star if the ferry service performs well this season. The ferry service said it has used about $8.1 million (Canadian) of its $13 million subsidy from the Canadian province so far this year. Nova Scotia provided the ferry service with $28.5 million in subsidies last year.
