Nova Star’s reported outstanding debts reach $2.6 million
A claim from an international supplier of marine fuel that Nova Star Cruises owes it more than $1 million for fuel has brought the total sum of claims from creditors to $2.6 million.
The Portland Press Herald reported that Dubai-based Cockett Marine Oil filed a notice Thursday in U.S. District Court in Portland that the ferry service owes it for fuel delivered from Aug. 31 to Oct. 31. The company is asking the court to order the ship be sold at auction to recoup what’s owed to the fuel supplier.
New York-based McAllister Towing and Transportation Co. also filed a notice claiming Nova Star owes it $12,000 in unpaid invoices for tugboat services.
U.S. Marshals seized the ferry, currently anchored in Casco Bay, on Oct. 30 after the creditors began filing complaints of outstanding debt.
Nova Star Cruises had operated the Portland-to-Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, ferry route for two years, but the Nova Scotia government announced in October it was negotiating with a different ferry operator for next season. The provincial government gave $41.5 million Canadian ($31.5 million USD) in subsidies to Nova Star in its two seasons.
