Oakhurst Dairy, which generates more than $100 million in annual revenue, has been sold to a farmer-owned dairy marketing cooperative for an undisclosed price.
The company announced its sale to Dairy Farmers of America, a cooperative made up of more than 8,000 farms in 48 states, with annual sales of $12.1 billion in 2012. Oakhurst, which will operate independently as a subsidiary of the cooperative, had been owned by the Bennett family since 1921. The company said in a statement released Friday afternoon that John Bennett and Tom Brigham will stay on at the company as co-presidents, and that it would retain all of its nearly 200 workers.
The company also said that it would continue not to use artificial growth hormone in its milk and would continue to source milk from the 70 farmers who currently supply the company.
Oakhurst’s sole manufacturing facility is in Portland with distribution facilities in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. According to the DFA’s website, its Northeast Area provides milk to customers including Dean Foods, Hershey Foods, HP Hood, Kraft Foods and Chobani Inc.
