OceanView at Falmouth, an 80-acre retirement community in the Portland suburb, continues to grow — most recently, with the addition of 10 new apartments that opened last week.

The units range in size from 530 to 740 square feet, according to a news release, and are part of the retirement community’s assisted living facility, Falmouth House. The facility now has 47 apartments.

OceanView also unveiled other changes at Falmouth House on Oct. 23, including an expanded and remodeled dining room, living room, activity room and kitchen. Together with the new apartments, the expansion totals 7,000 square feet.

The assisted living facility is designed for seniors who want to remain independent but need help with activities of daily living. In addition to personal assistance, Falmouth House offers medication management and is supervised by licensed nurses 24 hours a day. Amenities include prepared meals and activities such as exercise programs, art classes and lectures.

OceanView opened in 1986 with the Main Lodge — one large building — and 20 duplexes containing 800-square-foot apartments. Today, the sprawling, wooded campus off Route 9 includes 265 units of senior housing in cottages and apartments, a 24-unit memory-care facility and Falmouth House.

Last year, OceanView opened 48 custom-built cottages, which quickly sold out and then attracted a waiting list of potential residents.

The growth in the number of units and the variety of living options is a response to changing demographics in Maine.

The state's “Plan on Aging 2016-20” says, “As Maine's population ages, there is a greater interest in aging and active retirement, which may delay an older adults' need for physical assistance.” By 2030, 28% of Mainers will be over 65, according to the state report, up from 19% in 2015.

“At OceanView, we feel it is vital to offer the best possible care for residents in our community who need assisted living, but would still like to maintain their independence,” said John Wasileski, OceanView owner and director of development at Sea Coast Management Co. “This expansion is part of a larger effort to increase capacity due to a growing need and continue the high-quality, personalized care that OceanView offers residents at Falmouth House.”
