Oil spill prompts Auburn co. to expand

An Auburn manufacturer that makes composite packaging is expected to double its 30-person work force in response to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

Packgen President John Lapoint told the Sun Journal his company is beginning to produce oil-containing booms and plans to add staff in the next couple of weeks. The company makes other products to contain environmental and hazardous waste, has never sold booms commercially but is hoping to enter the market as the massive oil spill has resulted in a shortage of booms and an increase in demand nationwide. Lapoint said interest is high in the product, but so far the company does not have a contract with any buyers, and he is seeking help from state and federal officials to pitch the product. Lapoint's mother, Jana, who is also an investor and a board member, contacted Gov. John Baldacci, and on Monday he shot a video vouching for the company that now appears on its website.

An auditor for BP, the company that leases the oil rig that caught fire and sank last month, has visited Packgen and met with Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, who are promoting Packgen to authorities, according to the paper.
