It remains unclear whether ON Semiconductor Corp.’s plan to cut some 130 jobs will affect workers at its recently acquired Fairchild Semiconductor International Inc. plant in South Portland.
Phoenix-based chipmaker ON Semiconductor, which completed the $2.4 billion acquisition on Sept. 19, announced the cuts in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that same day.
“The first step of [the company’s plan] is to eliminate approximately 130 positions from its workforce as a result of redundancies and position eliminations,” Executive Vice President George Cave wrote in the document, which was signed on Sept. 23.
In its filing, the company expects that the annualized effect of the expense reductions will be approximately $25 million.
Company officials didn’t respond to Bangor Daily News’ request for a comment on whether the layoffs would affect Maine. A South Portland office employee told the paper that, “I’m unable to confirm or deny any information, unfortunately.”
